Have some fun, save your sanity
CREATIVE IDEAS FOR UNDER 5s
THE BASIC IDEA
A pot and a spoon, a tub and a stick, whatever you’ve got, tap out names or your favourite words: “cho-co-late”, “sun-flow-er”.
OVER TO YOU, WEE ONE
Your small people will probably just enjoy making a lot of noise at first. Don’t stress if they don’t join you tapping the words, just being an example for them is enough. Top tip: take your beats outside if you can
- Phonological awareness
- The stress relief and joy of getting to bash something
- Fast, slow, tongue twisters – have a ball!
- Copy their beats, no matter how random
- Make a game of trying to hit your ‘drum’ at exactly the same time they do
Babies and young children don’t need words to start communicating, so embrace the chaos and watch their reactions – over time, playing with beats will feel more like a conversation.
