CREATIVE IDEAS FOR UNDER 5s

THE BASIC IDEA

For wee ones (or adults!) who struggle with confidence when mark-making, drawing without looking at your paper can be a great way of getting rid of the idea of your creations having to “look” like something.

OVER TO YOU, WEE ONE

Try drawing each other’s faces without looking down at the paper. This requires a lot of eye contact and looking deeply at the person’s face. Once you’re finished you can laugh about the weird and wonderful pictures you drew!

CHEEKY BONUSES

  • Encourages confidence in mark-making
  • Focussed movements with pens/pencils – fine motor skills and building blocks of writing

VARIATIONS

  • Put together a bag of objects around your house, get your wee one to feel one with their eyes closed and then draw it!
  • Make your own “no peeking” box for very little ones by cutting two holes in the side for their arms and putting drawing materials on the other side

AND REMEMBER…

If your wee one is reluctant to join in, say “I wonder what will happen if I draw without looking!” – embrace the silliness and take the pressure right off. If they’re still feeling unsure, look up abstract art, or action painting, online together and praise colours and movement.
