Sound Hunters

  1. The basic idea

    Make a sound (woof like a dog, rumble like a washing machine) and ask your wee one to find or point to the object that makes the same sound. Start with sounds in the same room, then expand to sounds from around the home or even outside.

  2. Over to you, wee one

    Ask your wee one if they can pretend to be something noisy. Some will follow your lead and choose something in the room, others may be led by their imagination and choose noises they love. Let them develop the play they way they choose, keep guessing and wondering out loud and having fun.

  3. Cheeky bonuses

    • Listening and concentration skills
    • Developing vocabulary
    • Laughter is a great way to bond, and this can turn out to be a really silly game

  4. Variations

    • Swap the noises – ducks that moo are hilarious to wee ones!
    • Use your phone to record noises for more complex listening opportunities

  5. And remember…

    It doesn’t matter if your sounds aren’t very realistic, in fact your wee one might LOVE that they can make a better train/cat/letterbox noise than you can. Embrace the silliness.
